What’s in there?

Maria over at Mommy of Four asked me to share the contents of my purse with the world. For me, this ain’t hard. Here is my purse/tote:

Here is what is in my tote:

Yes, I am still in the diaper bag stage so all of my belongings go in there. So here is my Diaper Bag:

Isn’t it adorable? I hinted in a recent post that I’ve had trouble finding long lasting diaper bags. Shortly after that I decided to splurge on a hand made bag in the hopes that it will long out live the other mass produced versions I’ve tried. And it’s so adorable to boot. I purchased it from Pink Lemonade Boutique Bags and so far I love it! And no, I was not asked or paid to mention this.

Anyhow, aside from the typical baby stuff that belongs in diaper bags here is what I have in there for me:

Tissues, Notepad, Cell Phone, Breath mints, Clear Lip Gloss and my Pocketbook. There should be a pen in there as well but I don’t know where it disappeared to.

No makeup you say? Nope.

I’m a bit of a minimalist. And I’m a mascara and eyeshadow only makeup-wearer-ist (and even then usually only on Sundays for church), so my purse contents are not much to look at.

When I do go out by myself I just throw the cell phone and pocket book into my tote and I’m good to go. As for things like cash and keys, those are always in my pockets.

Want to play along? Feel free.

I heard this while listening to NPR tonight. And though the I’ve heard similar messages throughout my life, it truly touched my heart. And I felt hope concerning future periods of darkness, renew.

Words and music – Pete Morton
Listen To It

The beginning is now and will always be
You say you lost your chance, then fate brought you defeat
but that means nothing, you look so sad
You’ve been listening to those who say you missed your chance

There’s another train, there always is
Maybe the next one is yours
Get up and climb aboard another train

You feel you’re done there’s no such thing
although you’re standing on your own your own breath is king
The beginning is now don’t turn around
Regrets of bad mistakes will only drain you

There’s another train, there always is
Maybe the next one is yours
Get up and climb aboard another train

We crawl in the dark sometimes and think too much
Then we fill our heads with crazy things that only break our hearts
and I know you’ve seen what the earth can do
When it’s dragging down another load of worrisome fools

There’s another train, there always is
Maybe the next one is yours
Get up and climb aboard another train

I know it’s hard when you feel confused
You can crown yourself with fear now you feel you cannot move
You’re building worlds that don’t exist
Imagination plays the worst tricks

There’s another train, there always is
Maybe the next one is yours
Get up and climb aboard another train
There always is
Maybe the next one is yours
Get up and climb aboard another train

The Great Hamster Hunt

This is Keri.

Three days ago she joined our family due to one of my, must have a pet, whims. Count Dooku picked her out and even named her all by himself. We brought her home along with a cage, bedding and food and spent the day getting to know her.

But Keri didn’t like her new home. It was too small. She decided to escape through the tiny bars of her cage that I was assured were impossible for even a dwarf hamster to squeeze through. This was the same night we brought her home. Now Keri is enjoying free reign of the house while we try in vain to draw her out.

Late last night as I was getting ready for bed, a small dark shape darted right past my foot and the hunt began. She ran under the piano, so I had hubby grab the broom to block the exit on one side. He also gave me a carrot. She came out and nibbled a bit on the carrot and I reached down to grab her but that Hamster is so darn tiny and so darn fast it was to no avail.

She was back across the room under the couch in a second. We tried again to draw her out with a carrot, and this time I had a collander ready to pop on top of her. She came out and I slammed the collander down, but it landed partly on the carrot, leaving an opening just big enough for Keri to dart out of. Foiled again!

When we spotted her again she had darted underneath the bookshelf. I laid the carrot out and waited a while, but after looking under the bookshelf with a flashlight, discovered she had somehow managed to escape without our notice. So we settled down to watch a movie while keeping an eye on the carrot. After the movie was done I went to bed, asking Hubby to please remove the carrot from the floor before he went to bed. But of course he forgot, and when we came out this morning we found this:

The little rascal had her fill of carrot. It’s time to lay some serious traps tonight and then it’s back to the pet store with the dwarf hamster.

I miss having a pizza stone. It’s great for cookies. Ours broke.

What kitchen gadget do you never use/wish you hadn’t spent money on?
We received an apple corer/peeler device for our wedding and it’s crap. I finally tossed it.

What is your favorite cookbook
I actually don’t use a cookbook. I’ve compiled all my favorite recipes gathered from wherever into a binder. But when I’m looking for new recipes my favorite recipe site is Allrecipes.com

Who is your cooking inspiration
This ought to be who is my baking inspiration since my husband does most of the cooking and I bake. My love of baking started with my mom who let us help her make cookies in the kitchen as kids. Now one of my favorite things to do is bake with my kids.

What are the three most important items on your spice rack
cinnamon, cloves and (when I do cook) garlic salt

What are three recipes you use all the time?
For cooking, Chicken Crescents, Chicken Cheese Bake and Stuffed Manicotti

To easily remove garlic peel, lay a large sharp knife atop the garlic and give the garlic underneath a good quick pound with the flat of your hand. The peel will come right off.

What is your greatest cleaning secret
Murphy’s Oil Soap

What is your favorite thing to clean
Really, I just enjoy cleaning in general. A clean house feels so…happy

Advertising Genius

I would guess there is at least one McDonald’s French Fry in the majority of the cars in America. Maybe one is laying squished under the car seat, or in the crevice next to the front seat, molding because you can’t reach it with either vacuum hose or fingers.

What is the draw?

I really believe that if I didn’t have kids I would rarely visit McDonald’s. But those advertisers know their stuff. They know that parents have a hard time saying “no” to their children’s food delights. They know how to entice our little kiddos, what with the bright yellow arches, catchy commercial music and depictions of children having a blast with Ronald. It seems you can’t have a commercial break on Nick Jr. that doesn’t have a McDonald’s commercial in it.

Count Dooku and Obi-Wan learned very young about McDonald’s. We were so surprised one day while driving past some big golden arches to hear our then four and three year old boys humming, “Bah da bah, bah, baaaaah!” The theme music at the time on their commercials.

I got thinking about the evil genius today (perhaps evil is a bit harsh, but really, even with their “healthy” selections, is there really anything healthy about McDonald’s? Not in my opinion. I’ve worked there) because as we took a day trip, there were excited exclamations of , “McDonalds!” and “A play place!!” and “Can we go der after our trip?” and “Happy Meals!”

I’m seriously considering banning Nick Jr. and all of it’s kid targeted commercials over here.

Spring Break – Day 1

The term spring break, unfortunately does not refer to my husband being on break, nor does it refer to me actually getting a break. Count Dooku however, is home for SEVEN whole school days (9 total). Things could could get ugly around here people.

* Boys up and begging me for breakfast at 5:45 a.m.
* Minor drama this morning when boys discovered I had returned Bee Movie to the Redbox
* Count Dooku discovered the Kids Art Kit I purchased and begging me to open it ensued
* In an evident attempt to stave off early morning boredom Obi-Wan was discovered poking Angel Girl’s doughy belly in, repeatedly, while she just sat and watched.
* On our way out to see the speech therapist Obi-Wan fell and scraped his knee, side effect of a mad dash to be the first one to the car.
* On the way out of the speech therapists office, bawling ensued when Count Dooku beat Obi-Wan to the car.
* On the way into the apartment, more bawling ensued as Count Dooku beat Obi-Wan to the door.
* After getting inside the apartment, more bawling ensued as Obi-Wan hit Count Dooku for winning the race.
* Count Dooku pleaded some more for me to open the art kit
* 100 “Clean your room first”s later and boys are enjoying said Art Kit
* It’s 5:04 and I’m ready for bed.

I think it will be a rather long weekend and week next week.
